TIDE LOG — SEVEN NIGHTS
Kept by Mara Voss, Ashby Head Lighthouse. Times are local low tide.
The Saint Bride ran aground twelve days ago. Tonight the power went, then the radio, then the road. The lamp is still lit. I have four nights of oil.
Something on the shingle at Harbor Street. Nets. Barnacles. They stood up. They do not run. I counted forty before I stopped counting.
Elias reached me on channel 16. The Navy sealed the causeway at dawn. No boats. He says he recognises them. He pulled six of them out last winter.
They came up the lighthouse stair. I lit a flare and they stopped, all at once, like a held breath. Light works. Fire works. I have three rounds left.
Imogen found it in the fish first. A passenger. She says they are not coming for us. They are being called.
The bell at St. Brendan's. Every night, at the lowest water. I know who is pulling the rope. I don't know why he smiles.
The harbor went out further than it ever has. Something is standing up in it, wearing the Saint Bride like a shell. One night of oil. One flare. One bell.

FIELD NOTES — DR. I. HALE

Every soul this town lost to the sea, returned at once. Salt-cured skin, lungs full of brine, eyes gone to pearl. Walking pace. They follow the bell and nothing else.

Two hundred crewmen bound by net and rope and something older, wearing the hull of the Saint Bride like a shell. Rises only at the lowest water. Never seen in full.
“It isn’t a virus. It’s a passenger. And it wants to go home.” — I.H.
